From Pastor Brady

What causes our hearts to break over our sin? Is it our own guilt? Our embarrassment? Our worldly sorrow over the loss of something earthly?

For me it is pride. My heart breaks over my sin, not because of God’s grace, but because of my own pride. “I should be past this by now,” I think. Or, “You’re better than this Brady.” “You call yourself a Christian but you still ___.”

Grace should break our hearts. Grace tells us that we deserve so very little, while we have received so very much. To focus on the first part alone would make you self- loathing. To focus on the second part alone would make you self- absorbed.

Grace takes the focus off of us and puts it onto God; even in our times of sin. Our sacrifice to God is to focus on Him and His grace. His character. His holiness. His love and compassion. And this He will never despise.

Take a few moments to read all of Psalm 51. Where in the Psalm does David focus on the truth that he deserves so very little? Where does he focus on the truth that he has received so very much?

Where do you see these two truths in your own life this week? How can grace replace pride in your life this week?

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Psalm 51:17
